Overview

Inside The Book

I entered this world once the war had concluded, but my family was starting over from scratch. They were laying new foundations and rebuilding from ground zero. My earliest memories are marked by an environment where every penny was meticulously accounted for and allocated. The lingering effects of the war and the hardships afterwards became entrenched in our family history, a tale not unique to us but shared by countless others. It is challenging to put the past behind when its reminders are evident everywhere, metaphorically, and literally.

Countless youngsters who choose to stay in Nigeria are plagued by depression and other mental health disorders. Several meet their demise; many feel the sting of solitude and succumb to criminal acts and vicious slayings. As for myself, within my resilience, it feels like I have left my family in the place I once called home. I harbor aspirations that I am determined to see come to fruition, and my unwavering belief fuels my journey. These are the elements that propel me forward.

The topic of initiating a business venture is seldom discussed. For most Nigerians I am acquainted with in America, we've become accustomed to our routines and have allowed ourselves to be placed into predefined roles based on our education, profession, and academic journey. Many are nudged towards the healthcare sector, particularly nursing or medicine. I aim to assist these individuals, my Nigerian compatriots, in breaking free from the sense of tirelessly toiling without making substantial progress.

The notion of easy money is a fallacy. Expanding your horizons, as I have done, does not guarantee instant wealth; it requires dedication and perseverance. When situations take an unfortunate turn or mistakes occur, as they did for this Nigerian man, it is essential to face these challenges with integrity. Back in the day, I remember it was quite a sight to see him cruising around our locale in a luxurious Lexus while the rest of us could barely scrape together enough money to own a vehicle. He delighted in the notion of being our community's 'big shot,' and many admired and envied him.

In Rise And Thrive
My Journey to Financial Literacy, You Will Learn

Every aspect of my life is intrinsically tied to my childhood experiences in a post-war nation. Just as individuals from Rwanda and Israel identify themselves as survivors of genocide, we, the Igbo community of Nigeria, are living testimonies of survival from the genocidal Civil War that transpired from 1967 to 1970 in Nigeria.

Before the war, my father owned two residential properties in Nigeria's eastern region. These and a significant portion of his business were lost during the conflict. Nevertheless, a few assets survived the devastation, though considerably diminished.

In Nigeria, a child's journey often takes one of two paths. You either gain an education or join the ranks of the uneducated. However, this does not imply that those without formal education have no prospects. There are always opportunities to acquire diverse skills and engage in professions that do not necessitate literacy. Nevertheless, it is universally acknowledged that being educated provides a distinct advantage.

What dawned upon me swiftly was that survival, irrespective of my educational qualifications, needed a certain degree of invisibility within the system. I realized that my frugal lifestyle was not going to catapult me far. I was fully aware that this was not the path I wished to tread on. Hence, I had to find a way to regularize my stay, marking a crucial juncture in my professional journey. I had to change course, return to square one, secure my green card, and transition into a new career direction.

The dream of homeownership and financial autonomy has long been a cherished goal for many households. However, this aspiration often seems to be riddled with countless hurdles. Escalating property prices and increasing food and transportation costs, the road to financial independence seems to be an unending struggle. To add to these woes, when you believe you have a handle on your finances, interest rates surge, leading to a rise in mortgage payments. At times, you might question the authenticity of the so-called American Dream.

Unfair situations can take various forms. At times, it is evident in your yearly performance evaluation when you're marked as underperforming in an aspect you weren't aware was a problem. Alternatively, it may surface when a coworker points out your flaws to shift focus from their inadequacies. No matter the cause or scenario, it is painful. It undermines trust among individuals, fosters discord in relationships, and hampers practical work. While you do not have power over when it happens, you control your reaction. This requires an extraordinary level of integrity.

To illustrate, I am fervently devoted to narrating my life journey's highs and lows, aware that there will always be immigrants arriving in America pursuing the same dream I once looked for. My expedition has firmly ingrained in me that financial literacy is indispensable. It is a principle I advocate vehemently. Besides doing what is morally right by imparting my wisdom, I have discovered that I now thrive in an environment that truly resonates with who I am. My authentic self-shines through more than ever before.

Whether it is a challenging career path, personal relationships, or the broader strokes of immigrant experiences and societal observations, each chapter of our journey imparts wisdom. As you dive into these pages, you will uncover the distilled essence of experiences, mistakes, triumphs, and reflections. The aim is to narrate and impart, guiding you through the labyrinth of life's teachable moments.
